I’ve been studying the Bible for over 45 years, and from an LGBTQ-affirming viewpoint for over 30 years. Besides my own studies, I’ve taken time to learn from great teachers of past and present, while leaving behind their anti-LGBTQ baggage.

I am an ordained pastor-teacher in The Covenant Network, a charismatic LGBTQ-affirming network of ministers and churches based in Atlanta, Georgia. I live in northeast Ohio, where I served All Saints Community Church as pastor for 13 years, and still preach occasionally.

I was ordained into ministry at All Saints Community Church on January 4, 2009. I didn’t expect to take over as pastor in early March 2009 (that’s another story), but I decided early on that there was one thing some of my predecessors wore that I wouldn’t - a tab-collar clergy shirt (see above).

When the first-ever Youngstown Pride event came, All Saints was present, and as pastor, I would be there. But how do people know that I’m the pastor? It was important to me that people knew that even the pastor was supporting the LGBTQ community.

Wearing a robe and stole (as I wore for many years on Sundays) wasn’t appropriate for the environment, and I would probably soil it. Then I thought, “What if I get a tab-collar clergy shirt? People will recognize me as pastor!”

I had just enough time to order a shirt my size and get it delivered the day before the event.

And years later, if I’m speaking at an event outside of All Saints, or if I wouldn’t be wearing robe and stole during service at All Saints, then I wear a tab-collar clergy shirt, often paired with black pants and sports jacket.

Ingredients:

  • One can of pineapple tidbits, drained

  • 7-8 slices of bread, cut into pieces

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup milk (skim or 2% is fine)

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup/8 tbsp) butter, melted (I use unsalted butter)

  • Pan: 8″ square or 9″ round pan. If you have a slightly bigger pan, add another slice of bread. Double the ingredients for a 13×9 pan. Foil pans are fine.

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray the pan with a cooking spray.

Cut up the bread into small pieces (I do 3 cuts across and 3 cuts down with scissors). Mix the drained pineapple with it and put in the pan.

Mix the eggs, milk, sugar, and melted butter thoroughly. Pour over the bread and pineapple.

Put in the oven. Bake for 45 minutes (check it at 40 minutes - some ovens are fast). It should be golden brown like the picture above. Remove from the oven promptly.

If you’re not eating right away, put foil over the top to keep moisture in.
